Thankfully it's March and that means we are closer to sunshine, blue skies and long summer nights. There will be barbeque's, pool parties and many afternoons spent grilling out and enjoying every moment until school starts back up (but that's when the real fun begins). One of the most important things for your baby these upcoming sunnier months, is sunscreen. Make sure you're packing.
Organic may not be a word you would associate with sunscreen, shampoo or even clothing. But babies have very sensitive skin, and you're less likely to meet up with a bad reaction when you apply product that has fewer, more natural ingredients. Sunscreen is no exception.
I've compiled a list for you here of some of the favorite organic brands in the industry. Some I have used personally, and others come as recommendations from friends. Either way, they've each got great reviews and come at decent prices so, pick one or two stock up!
Alba Very Emollient Sunscreen comes in a fragrance free selection with SPF 30. Although they sell a kids product, it still has a fragrance and I'm not too keen on that.
This product features no sulfates and is certified organic. The first ingredient is water, followed by aloe leaf juice, which I am very okay with.
You can pick up a bottle anywhere from $6-12, depending on whether you purchase it online or in store.
Aubrey Organics has been a brand I have turned to many times over the years. From their shampoo selection to their skin care, my Mother and I have never been disappointed. Aubrey sunscreen was one product that accompanied me to many a summer camp as a kid, and I'll definitely count on it now with my children (that sounds weird to say).
They have two unscented selections, and I would most likely pick the higher SPF for a baby. The bottle is smaller for the price, but you get what you pay for. As with many of the other certified organic sunscreens, Aubrey does not test on animals and feature vegan and gluten free products.
While I'd pick Aubrey over another selection at a brick and mortar retailer, $16 is a little steep for a 4 ounce tube in my opinion.
Kiss My Face features lotions that I love, and shampoos that my Mother-in-Law cannot live without! Although I haven't tried their sunscreen, it's one I would definitely purchase if it were available locally. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a fragrance free product.
Although they feature a Kid's sunscreen, I'm not keen on the scents, so I'd most likely pick up something with the same SPF in a toned down fragrance. Their ingredient list is also a bit long for my taste, and it isn't certified organic at a pricey $15 for 4 ounces.
Something relatively easy for squirmy little ones comes in a convenient little stick application from Burt's Bees. This is another brand I have used for sun care in the past, and a brand I continue to purchase for my daughter. They feature a name I trust for shampoo, conditioner and diaper care.
This baby sunscreen features no phthalates, parabens, petroleum or SLS, and is pediatrician tested as well as hypo-allergenic. Although it may not be certified organic, it's a SPF 30 with 100% natural ingredients I would trust.
And finally, this last product is one I have neither heard of or personally tried. COOLA is a relatively newer brand on the market, an idea that hatched around 10 years ago as an alternative to your run-of-the-mill surfer sunscreen.
At $36, this 3 ounce tube is specifically made for babies as young as 6 months old! This SPF 50 creates a safe barrier from the sun as well as pollutants and dust particles. It's 100% natural, preservative free and provides full protection for 80 minutes per application.
