Create a Registry

I have hated registries since my husband and I got engaged. Everyone expects you to create one, and I find it difficult to add items that are the right price, size and feature store availability for the older folks (who don't trust online shopping). The situation though, is that these items for being engaged, getting married and having a baby are very, very expensive. As I've mentioned before, I get rather brand specific with many things, so it gets hard for me to create registries.

Many users of online forums will tell you not to add obvious items, don't go above a certain price point and to add items for the gifter's personalities. Well, I'm calling their bluff, because while they profess to post these "perfect" registries, chances are they're chalked full of crap the baby doesn't need. And while I'd prefer to make one and be done, with something such as Amazon, I know my relatives and I know they'll want to physically get in the car and go buy it. And that's fine, that's exactly why I sucked it up and created a Target registry.

My journey began on my Amazon registry, where I was able to scour every item possible, bring it down to a few necessary items, or some I just flat out liked, and find it on Target's site (as long as it was available in store). There are nearly 100 items on my Target registry, from lotions and baby wash to a bassinet and Eddie Bauer travel system. Although many are expensive, the general range is from $25-50. And when I'm left with the expensive things nobody wanted to purchase, they'll be there to remind me of what I needed or wanted for future purchases (people love gift cards).

The best thing about giving/receiving a gift card, is that the balances can be combined on purchases. Never feel bad about gifting a card at a baby shower when everyone bought specific items, that pregnant lady is going to be thankful to have a choice in her gift from you. It seems simple, and maybe "too small", but it fits in a wallet just fine (assuming you get it from a store she's registered). Although many people decide for themselves what they'll be giving, regardless of registry items, they aren't always welcomed. Everyone has different tastes, so keep that in mind! Registries take time and effort, and that shouldn't be taken lightly. Consider her feelings in the matter, and buy several items if you'd like (whether it's from THAT store, or another).

In short, take time to look for exactly what your baby needs, or what you want to make life easier in the chaotic future. You will appreciate the gifts more, and if your invited guests pay attention to your registry, they'll know they purchased something that was wanted. Have fun!
