It seems like just yesterday my daughter was a squirming little newborn in tiny, itty bitty diapers. Now she's three months old, and has gone through four diaper sizes, to a size three! And since our babies haven't quite learned to talk yet, you need to keep an eye out for simple indicators as to when he or she is ready to move up into a bigger diaper.
If your baby is like mine with her thunder thighs, you must be diligent in checking how tight the diaper is around their fat legs. Once you begin noticing significant red marks while changing a diaper, it is most definitely time to go up a size. Another sign is when they have a bit of a muffin top (no, you don't have to pull those tabs as tight as they will go). Once the sticky part doesn't reach the dedicated strip on the diaper, you know you're in a wrong size.
Blowouts can also indicate you are putting your baby into something too small, and even too big. There shouldn't be a gap in the back above the crack (I realize this rhymes), maybe that will help you remember. Also, you should be watchful of how much space the baby has from the bottom of her cheeks to the bottom of the diaper. If there isn't much room, the poop is going to get out somehow (i.e. all over their clothes)
Unfortunately, you'll notice, as you move up in size the diaper count goes down and you begin to pay more per diaper. Take this opportunity to check out prices from online retailers, such as Amazon, for an amazing discount. The only downfall to purchasing in a larger quantity is the chances your baby may move up in size long before you've finished up your stock. I know my little girl went through six packs of newborns, three and a third packs of ones, two and a half packs of twos and is on her second pack of threes. Each baby is different, so keep this in consideration (but you could always save, pass along or sell your remainders online).
